The Kinky Grandma

Yesterday afternoon the house hunk and I went to do laundry. In a conversation with the laundry attendant she told me that another one of the customers had talked to her about meeting me... how neat my e-reader was... how interesting it was that she'd actually met a woman who wrote books for a living. Then she said, "The lady just couldn't get over how you don't look like someone who would write those kinds of books. You're a grandma."

The day before yesterday, someone else made a similar comment--something along the lines of "I don't know any other grandmas that think about the kinky stuff you do!" Hmmm. Really? Have you asked them?

My experience says otherwise. Of all the women I've met and talked with, the most accepting, the most curious, the ones most eager to explore the websites and buy the books are... the ones my age. I've contemplated on this for a while. And this is what I think is happening. My generation grew up just a shade too early for the peace and love phase and just a shade too late for the post war phase so we're in the middle, not quite liberated, and not quite repressed.

We're well read. We know we have the right to exciting adventurous sex and as many orgasms as we can manage, but where will we go for information? Most women my age are not likely to search out the internet, visit an adult toy store, or scour the library for information. Those wouldn't be lady-like, even if we do have those unlady-like urges.

And let us be truthful here. While the ladies just a bit younger than us are perfectly willing to let it all hang out and share way too much information of a personal nature, our generation can barely mention the words penis and vagina without stuttering and flushing unbecoming shades of red--even in the doctor's office. There is no way that the shy grandmas are gonna sit down at a coffee klatch and share their deepest desires.

Where can we seek out books that cater to our wildest fantasies? Ahhhh. E-publishing to the rescue. With publishers that produce books that at last leave the bedroom door open and show the action grandma can satisfy her curiosity in the privacy of her own home. Perhaps--just perhaps she will find out that her strange hankering for handcuffs and silk scarves isn't all that strange. Maybe her deep curiosity about nipple clamps and other toys is satisfied and possibly she will even develop the courage to ask her partner of yay many years to try out something new. Who knows? She might discover that there's an amazing kaleidoscope that encompasses romantic sex.

Romantic sex is more than candles, soft music and lacy lingerie. It might include shibari bondage or leather cuffs or nipple chains if the people involved want to try those. There are unlimited positions, flavored lotions, and scented oils. Why limit something so wondrous to a once-a-week, lights-out duty? Whether in a hot shower, hot tub, swimming pool, hidden waterfall, or lost lagoon the settings for our books offer new ideas, new visions, new fantasies to share with our partners.

Do I look like your average dumpy grandma? Alas, I must admit that I do. I have lived life and every minute of it is written on my face, lumpy celullite ridden body, and pile of wiry gray hair. But that doesn't mean that romance dies. After forty years, it means that there's a freedom, an acceptance of each other that allows experimentation and curiosity without shame or fear. At our ages who else are we gonna play with? Time is getting short. "Some day" is right around the corner. Sigh. Just call me the kinky grandma. I can take it.

  2. You're right. A lot of women who buy my books are women who never went to college, and enjoy the antics of my girls:)

  3. And yet you are so much more adventurous than I. I still can't say those words without blushing and I'm not part of your generation.

  5. You go Anny! I hope I'm just as kinky when I get to be a grandma (which better be a very long time from now)

  6. My grandma (at 92) would have loved your books. Although she was no longer physically active, she admitted that her mind was quite alive and recounted her "best ever" experience as being in the pantry mid-afternoon. Who woulda thunk it? I didn't know "old" people still thought about "things like that".

  7. Glad you wrote this. There damned well better be plenty of sex and sexual exploration in your older years. Otherwise, what is the pont of working so hard to be able to spend it comfortably?
