Alien Slugs and Rainy Days

So. We went out for the hunk's doctor appointment yesterday. It was raining. Naturally. Not the wimpy little sprinkles the weather people call rain, but actual big rain drops pounding the car, killing visibility, and settling in ponds on the street.

You would think in that case everyone would slow down. And you would be wrong. No, no, no. In a demonstration of insanity, everyone decided the traffic was really an unannounced street race. With predictable results.

Added to the misery was the chaos committed in the name of security when the President of the United States decides to visit someplace obscure. In this case, it was the village where I live. Streets were closed. Traffic backed up.

Why? Does he really think it endears him to voters? Really? I think not.

After all of that, we actually arrived at the doctor's office on time. He had his exam. The report was good. He's cancer free and isn't scheduled for another appointment for three months. The alien slug we all call cancer was defeated.

Good show.

Monday, Monday

Cold and rainy this AM. We were warned there will be no water from 10 AM to 4 PM. What a day. Whether you're going outside the home to work or staying in, somehow Monday mornings are pukeable. Rainy Monday mornings are more so--unless you're sleeping in.

Hmmmm. Maybe I'll just go back to bed!

What are your plans?

This 'n' That

It's Monday! And I'm home. We had a great time over the weekend at the booksigning. The other authors were lovely, funny women. Met one author who turned out to be an old acquaintance, though neither of us knew each other under our pen names. That was funny. We both worked for the same place.

There were the usual crazy drivers on the road. Can I just say? If you're in the "fast" lane, what is the point of zipping in and out of the "slow" lane? Especially when there's only six or seven car lengths between the cars? Are you trying to kill someone?

We're in the middle of a cold wave. Temps are down to the nineties. I don't know how we'll cope. It sure would be nice if we had some rain here as the grass is that nasty brown color and feels like straw. Sigh. I guess we're never happy with what we have.

Today is my brother's birthday. Happy birthday, Jack! May you have many, many more! I love you.

Until tomorrow! Be happy and blessed.

Thursday Thunders

The pic is in honor of my Aussie friend who's been let down once again by the powers that be at good ol' Promptel. May she get internet service soon!

It's raining here. Supposed to rain all day. I kind of like rain as long as I don't have to drive in it. I like the way it smells. I like the sound of it on the roof. I like the way is sounds on the wind.

When I was a kid, one of the places we lived was on the side of a hill...literally. The yard of the house "next door" was level with our roof. Our yard was level with the roof of the house below us. When my father needed to repair our roof, he went up to the yard next door with a plank and used that as a bridge from that yard to our roof.

The weather there was mostly hot and dry. It was desert scrub--some mesquite, some cactus. Rain was sparse. Snow was even more so. And in the few short months we lived in that house we had both. The snow I wrote about at Christmas time. This time I'll tell you about the rain.

When my father bought that house it wasn't quite "finished". It was a concrete block three bedroom house. The kitchen was small, but we had a dining room to eat in and trust me that was quite a novelty for us. The house before this one was a tiny trailer attached to a concrete block building used by the church for Sunday School classes. As you can imagine there were real privacy issues.

Anyway, when Mom and Dad first used the sinks and tub, they made a discovery. There was no plumbing. The pipes didn't go anywhere. So Dad added some lengths of pipe so that they drained outside into the garden, thereby serving two purposes. The kitchen sink drained out near the back door where we had a giant four o'clock growing.

That part of Arizona is occasionally blessed with the remnants of a tropical storm or hurricane. That's what happened this particular time. The tropical storm moved over our area and rained. It wasn't some gentle little drizzle that would gradually soak into the dry ground. Nope. This was a rip, roaring rainstorm that poured down like Noah's flood.

The water just rolled down the mountain. When it made it to the edge of the yard above us, it flowed over the side like Niagara Falls. Of course there wasn't anywhere for that much water to go so it just flowed right under the doors and kept coming. Eventually the better part of it rolled on around the other side of the house and poured down on the house below us.

It took us a while to get the water in the house cleaned out. Dad had to run a garden hose through our drain pipes to wash the sand and mud away. And three days later, the yard was as dry as a desert again.

What I remember the most about that storm is the clean up. When the floors were finally dry, Mom put a coat of paste wax on them and then gave all of us kids rags. We'd stand on the rags and twist around polishing the floor. So way before some fellow name Chubby Checker was doing the twist--we thought of it first.

Rain on the Roof

Tomorrow Traveller's Refuge is released from Ellora's Cave. I'm antsy from waiting and have found that the best thing is to keep busy so I've been writing.

Stalled with Daffodil so I began a new work in progress. It starts with a plane crash in a storm. Well, I was sitting here in the AC with the sun shining brightly trying to conjure up the necessary atmosphere for a storm when a thundering crash overhead shook the building. I looked up and realized that a storm had rolled in while I was busy writing.

Thunder boomed, lightning cracked and water poured out of the sky like God had turned the spigot on full blast. I savored the height of the storm, jotting down notes for the story. My dog has just about panted herself dry. She is terrified of storms. And this one doesn't seem ready to stop.

I went over to the Weather Channel website and discovered that it's a huge storm covering a large chunk of Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. So I guess we'll have rain for a while yet. That's okay. We need rain. We have straw growing in the front yard and wilting trees which make me sad. There must be something weird about me because I love rain.

I especially love rain when you wake up in the morning and it's all gray and dreary and it says "all day long"... because then you just curl up and go back to sleep. Those are the kind of days I like best. Of course, I have the luxury of not having to leave my apartment and I understand that others do have to go out in the wet. So did I for a lot of long years. But for all of you that have to be in the rain... your day will come.

I have friends and acquaintances who haven't had rain in forever. Because of them, I'm incredibly thankful that we have the rain. I don't take it for granted. I don't complain or belly ache about it. It's a gift from God that's precious beyond measure. And I pray that my friends will have the joy of rain someday very soon. Enough rain to fill Amarinda's water tank. Enough rain to make Helen's flowers grow. Enough rain that they won't have to limit their showers to three minutes... maybe they'll be able to take six or seven!

In the meantime, I'll sit here with the door open and enjoy the scent and taste and sound of the rain.

Be careful what you ask for...

Early this morning I posted a short post on my author's loop, bemoaning the fact that we needed rain. Mentioned that our grass was pitiful burned straw. Somebody was listening. For the last half hour it has POURED. We now have a pond in the back yard with water rushing down the hill. Of course, the ground is so dry and hard that the water is mostly not soaking in--just washing away. But I ran out onto the balcony and quickly lined my potted plants up on the railing to catch whatever water I could. Hey! It's free and unprocessed. The radar shows another storm cell headed our way so I'll leave them up there a while...just in case.

Someone evidently complained about the hot water so now we're back to barely warm temps. It's not even hot enough to wash dishes. And shower? We're back to being able to shower without turning on the cold water at all. Sigh. Like Goldilocks and the three bears, it's either too much or not enough. Someday it'll be just right.

Food is often like that. Have you noticed? You order your scrambled eggs done. Notice I didn't say "well" done. When they arrive, either they're runny or crispy brown. Same with the hash browns. Either they're lukewarm, barely past the frozen stage, or they're charred. Wonder why that is? And toast? Don't even go there.

It seems some days as though you'll never quite have things just right. When was the last time you looked around you and said to yourself, "Things are just right?" Are we getting too picky?Waiting for perfection? I don't know.

Well, I'll be happy with the rain we received. If nothing else the bushes and flowers received a good soaking. And maybe one day we'll have the kind of rain the says "all day." You know the kind of rain I'm talking about? It just keeps gently falling out of a heavy gray sky. That's the watering kind of rain. Slow but sure. Just right.
